What Is LEGO Creator?
LEGO Creator is a theme that focuses on creative construction parts with a few specialized bricks to create buildings, vehicles, creatures, and robots. They have more vehicles than any other theme.
All LEGO sets in the LEGO Creator theme are 3-in-1 meaning the same pieces can be used to build an entirely different model.
The theme was launched in 2001 and was originally called Creator and was said to have replaced the old Model Team theme.
Creator is the parent theme to LEGO Icons (Modular Buildings), a subtheme for adults and adolescents that feature advanced building techniques and a large number of pieces, mostly known for detailed vehicles and Modular Buildings.
The theme has also had several sub-themes such as mosaics and X-Pods, small portable containers that contained small sets of LEGO bricks, and came with a strap to join them together for easy mobility and transportation.
What Is LEGO Creator Expert?
LEGO Creator Expert (now LEGO Icons) is a sub-theme of LEGO Creator, introduced in late 2012 with sets featuring large, detailed, buildings and vehicles aimed at experienced LEGO fans (adolescents and adults).
The theme is considered a challenge to LEGO designers and the target audience and features models such as sculptures, aircraft, and world buildings, selling as exclusives with numerous specialized elements and complex building techniques.
In 2013, LEGO merged its advanced technique models into the Creator Expert theme with previously exclusive sets sold under the Creator Expert theme and some receiving new updated packaging.
LEGO Expert sets were advertised specifically for adolescents and adults until 2020 when the boxes ceased using the branding as “Creator expert” and simply used an 18+ age rating and a simple black box to further advertise for an older demographic.
In 2022, the LEGO Group announced that the Creator expert theme will be rebranded as LEGO icons in June 2022 to help adult LEGO fans (AFOLs) find new, immersive builds or models that link to their interests and passions, particularly when browsing or shopping online.
According to the LEGO Group, the LEGO Icons theme will span all sets designed for older LEGO builders that are not already part of an existing theme such as LEGO Architecture, LEGO Technic, LEGO City, or LEGO Ideas.
